Waar Duitslands een na langste rivier, de Main, uitmondt in de Rijn, ligt de stad Mainz. Wie vanaf de Main aan komt varen ziet een spectaculaire skyline van hypermoderne wolkenkrabbers naast de toren van de eeuwenoude St. Martin Dom. In één oogopslag vertelt de skyline de essentie van de stad: een moderne, welvarende stad met een lange geschiedenis. Deze begon toen de Romeinen hun Mogontiacum stichtten op de locatie van een Keltische nederzetting. Hier en daar treft men in de stad restanten: de Dativius-Victor-Poort, het theater, een stukje van de Drususstein, de Jupiterzuil. In 2000 ontdekten archeologen bij toeval de tempel van de Egyptische godin Isis. Inmiddels zijn de fundamenten blootgelegd en beschermd. Romeinse vondsten zijn te zien in het Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum.
Sfeer in de schaduw van de dom
Als een van de weinige steden aan de Rijn heeft Mainz nog de oorspronkelijke oude binnenstad. Hoog boven die binnenstad rijst de imposante St Martin Dom uit. De eerste steen werd gelegd in 975. In de schaduw van de Dom ligt de grote oude binnenstad, met smalle steegjes vol winkeltjes en boetiekjes. In de grotere straten getuigen prachtig gerestaureerde gevels en barokke kerken van een geschiedenis vol welvaart. Een van die kerken is de St. Stephan Kirche gebouwd op romaanse funderingen. Na de renovatie, maakte Marc Chagall een uniek blauw raam voor deze kerk. Mooi is ook de naastgelegen kloostergang. Neem ook een kijkje in de Augustinerstrafle met de verrassende Augustinerkirche en bijbehorend klooster. Van overtreffende schattigheid is de Kirschgarten met romantische vakwerkhuizen en de Marienfontein.
Literatuurstad
De bekendste inwoner van Mainz is Johannes Gutenberg, een van de mensen die gezien wordt als de uitvinder van de boekdrukkunst. Natuurlijk is er nu een Gutenberg Museum. Wellicht dankzij Gutenberg is Mainz een opvallend literaire stad met een Stadsschrijver, Monika Maron, een Literatuurbureau, een boekenbeurs voor kleine uitgeverijen en bijzondere bibliotheken waaronder de Martinus bibliotheek met religieuze boeken.
